Care keeps your solar lights glowing
Solar lights are low-maintenance, but a little care keeps them bright and lasting for years — especially through India's dust and monsoon. Here's how to look after yours.
Keep the solar panel clean
This is the most important task. Dust, grime, and bird droppings block sunlight and reduce charging. Wipe the panel with a damp cloth regularly — even monthly cleaning noticeably improves brightness.
Clean the light cover too
Wipe the LED cover/lens so dirt doesn't dim the light output. A quick clean keeps them shining at their best.
Check and replace batteries
Rechargeable batteries lose capacity over time (usually after a year or two). If a light gets dim or short-lived even with good charging, replacing the rechargeable battery (where possible) restores it — cheaper and greener than buying new.
Protect during heavy monsoon
- Good IP-rated lights handle rain, but check seals stay intact.
- During extreme storms, you may bring portable/decorative lights indoors.
- Make sure water isn't pooling around ground-stake lights.
Reposition with the seasons
The sun's angle changes through the year. If lights seem dimmer in winter, reposition or re-angle the panel to catch more of the lower sun.
Store unused lights properly
If you store solar lights for a long period, keep them somewhere with some light (not total darkness) and charge them occasionally, so the batteries don't fully drain and degrade.
Check fittings and stakes
Periodically check that wall mounts are secure and ground stakes are firmly in place, so lights don't fall or get damaged.
Handle gently
Solar panels and LED covers can scratch or crack. Handle lights carefully when cleaning or moving them to keep them working well.
A little care, years of free light
Keep the panels clean, replace batteries when needed, and protect them in extreme weather — and your solar lights will brighten your home for years.
